What is AMIT?

Australian Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists (AMIT) is a network encompassing the taxonomic expertise of all the natural history museums of Australia, and related institutions. AMIT was formed in 2002 and held its inaugural meeting in Sydney in August 2002.

Why AMIT?

Australia's marine invertebrate fauna is at least as diverse as any comparable area in the world, yet for many groups it remains poorly known. Taxonomic expertise for marine invertebrates is spread across all natural history museums in Australia. Through their researchers and collections, these museums are also contact points for taxonomic expertise outside the museums, and overseas. Many researchers and consultants working on ecological surveys and similar projects find it difficult to locate taxonomic expertise necessary for their study.

AMIT objectives

  • to raise awareness of the diversity of Australian marine invertebrates
  • to develop more widely available identification tools for Australian marine invertebrates, including field guides and online distribution maps
  • to encourage research on Australian marine invertebrates
  • to develop taxonomic expertise on Australian marine invertebrates through the training new taxonomists
