AMIT projects

At present, the principal AMIT project is the Ports Survey Integration Project. This project, funded by the Department of Environment and Heritage through the Natural Heritage Trust, aims to integrate into museum collections and databases those specimens resulting from port surveys for introduced marine organisms. For further information visit Ports Survey Integration Project background.

The principal outcomes of the Ports Survey Integration Project will be to:
  • Transfer to museums those collections of invertebrates resulting from port surveys for introduced species.
  • "Target species" (those known to be introduced, and some of uncertain status) to be curated and entered onto museum registration databases. Visit this link to see the target species list.
  • All target species identifications to be verified by best available taxonomic authority.
  • Target species distribution data made available via museum databases to OZCAM (Online Zoological Collections of Australian Museums). These data are also intended to provide live updates to the distribution maps for introduced species on the National Introduced Marine Pest Information System (NIMPIS) at CRIMP.
  • Non-target taxa and unsorted material will be held by museums until the conclusion of project; funds may be available for further prioritised sorting otherwise unsorted material may be kept or, in some instances, discarded by agreement with Project Manager and Department of Environment and Heritage.
