The Malacological Society of Australasia

Our endowment fund

This is your opportunity to support the future of molluscs and their study by contributing to the Endowment Fund of The Malacological Society of Australasia Ltd ACN 067 894 848 (a non profit public company limited by guarantee).

DONATION and BEQUEST FORMS

With your generous support we aim to raise $100,000 to resume our Molluscan Research Grants. This fund will be used to support projects by teachers, students, amateurs and researchers but will not be used for research projects likely to attract alternative funding. Members of the MSA Council are not eligible for funding.

Does hobby shell collecting have a future?
There is a common misconception that hobby shell collecting is harming the shores. Although such shell collecting has minimal impact it is difficult to prove this to the public, government departments, conservation organisations etc. Your donation can help fund research and public education to help ensure the future of shell collecting as a hobby.

Does the study of molluscs have a future?
Students must be encouraged and supported if malacology is to have a future. Your donation will help:

  • encourage interest in high school and university students and their teachers
  • train students in malacology
  • assist students to participate in national and international malacological meetings
  • fund post graduate and amateur projects
  • fund scholarships

Do molluscs have a future?
Many more land and freshwater molluscs have become extinct in the last 300 years than birds and mammals combined - and yet little is being done about their conservation, including appropriate research. Your donation can help:

  • fund programs that will help raise public awareness
  • fund research to identify the areas in most urgent need of protection
  • facilitate interaction with other conservation organisations
  • train people to address these problems
  • fund research on threatened species
