Alvinellidae

Natural History

The Alvinellidae are large tube-dwelling worms which are only found surrounding deep-sea hydrothermal vents. They are often conspicuous and numerous members of the specialised communities found in these environments.

Diversity

Two genera and about 14 species of Alvinellidae are known (Desbruyeres & Laubier, 1986). None are known from Australian waters. The guide presented here describes both genera.
