Lumbrineridae

Natural History

Lumbrineridae

Lumbrinerids are common benthic polychaetes which can be found from intertidal to abyssal depths. They are known to inhabit a variety of substrates but are most common in soft sediments. Petch (1986) showed that a population of Lumbrineris cf. latreilli in Western Port were selective subsurface deposit feeders but other feeding modes are likely in other taxa.

Diversity

The Lumbrineridae comprises 13 genera and more than 200 species; 4 genera and 12 species are known from Australian waters (Orensanz 1990; Frame 1992; Paxton 2000). All 13 genera, the 12 Australian species and several incompletely identified forms also from Australian waters can be identified with the interactive key.
