Pholoidae

Natural History

Pholoids are small scaleworms which inhabit interstitial spaces, under rocks, in crevices and on muddy bottoms with shells and debris. They are found from the intertidal zone to the deep sea.

Diversity

The interactive key follows Pettibone (1992a) who recognised six genera and 12 species in the Pholoidae. Many species are reportedly cosmopolitan in distribution. Only 4 species in 2 genera are presently known from Australia fauna, but this probably reflects the limited study of Australian scale worms, especially from interstitial habitats.
