Sabellariidae
Natural History
Sabellariids, whether solitary or colonial in reefs, are suspension-feeders employing buccal cirri
and prostomial tentacles to create water currents that trap
suspended particles in mucus. They may also be detrital feeders.
Diversity
Globally, the Sabellariidae comprises 11 genera and about 120 species.
Since then four new genera have been described and 46
new species, many by Kirtley (1994).
The Australian fauna, recently revised by
Hutchings & Peart (in prepartion), comprises 5 genera and 15 species.
