Sabellariidae

Natural History

Sabellariids, whether solitary or colonial in reefs, are suspension-feeders employing buccal cirri and prostomial tentacles to create water currents that trap suspended particles in mucus. They may also be detrital feeders.

Diversity

Globally, the Sabellariidae comprises 11 genera and about 120 species. Since then four new genera have been described and 46 new species, many by Kirtley (1994). The Australian fauna, recently revised by Hutchings & Peart (in prepartion), comprises 5 genera and 15 species.
