Tomopteridae
Natural History
Tomopterids are pelagic polychaetes which are most often collected from depths less than 500 m, although they have been collected from depths exceeding 3000 m.
They are carnivores, consuming such pelagic organisms as chaetognaths, tunicates and fish
larvae.
Diversity
The Tomopteridae comprises two genera: the monotypic Enapteris and
Tomopteris with about 40 species. Three species of Tomopteris have been reported from Australian waters, but polychaetes from plankton samples in Australia have not been systematically studied.
